Harlequins vs Colorado Springs

The Quins' first game of the season started off slowly as we tried to assimilate some new players, and some old players in new positions. The match started off as expected, with Colorado Springs coming out fast and hard from the first whistle. The Grizzlies are always a physical side and managed to keep the Quins on their heels for the first 20 minutes, scoring two tries, and pinning us in our own half.

As we started to hit our rhythm, the old Quin magic began to reappear. A few breaks through their backline, and a fruitless chip ahead (recovered by Bryan "Doc" Fox) gave us back the confidence we needed to open up the scoring for the Quins.

In a combination of great back and forward work, the Quins bashed the ball down the field, running phase after phase of ball, until we were well into the Springs' territory. On Dan "Dingo" Hyde's call, hooker cum scrumhalf Gilligan fired the ball straight out of the ruck, dropping it perfectly at Dingo's ankles. In an amazing fit of athleticism, he caught it, eluded a tackle, and squibbed ahead to the ingoal. Gary Beaudette put on the finishing touch, racing past the Grizzly fullback to score the try.

Dingo converted the try, and 5 minutes later, added another 3 points from a Grizzly offside penalty.

As the halftime whistle blew, the team focussed on keeping control of the rest of the game. It started out favorably when blindside Jon "forwards don't kick" Trussler booted ahead to their fullback, who recovered the ball, only to be tackled and stripped of possesion by Doc Fox. Richie "Krystal" Kindel took the pass from Doc and dotted down over the line.

The Quins weren't out of the woods yet, as 2 penalties gave the Springs a 6pt lead. Just as the sky began to darken, Springs were awarded a 5m defending scrum. The Quin pack brought back memories of the glory days as Rocky Schneider and Dan Roder lead it hard in from the front, Gilligan stole the tighthead, and Ron James and John Kosanovich drove the pack over. Captain Rob Kuck scored what Coach Mark Bullock later described as "the easiest try of his life."

Dingo converted the try to secure the game for the Quins.

Final result: 24-23.
