Harlequins vs Queen City

It was the best of halves, it was the worst of halves. From the initial
kickoff, it seemed that the Quins would have this game in hand, but we let
off the gas around halftime, and almost gave the game away.
Incredible pressure from the opening saw Queen City forced to dive over the
initial ruck. The missed goal was followed by one ruck off the 22 drop, and
on his first touch of the game, Gary Beaudette cut through 3 defenders to
dot down in the first minute.
Off the restart, Queen City infringed the offside line and was rewarded by a
50meter kick from Dan Hyde. The short lineout was quickly won by Hugh
Miller, with captain Rob Kuck advancing through the gain line and most of
the Queen City backline before passing to Jon Trussler at the 5meter mark.
Jon tripped over the goal line for the Quin's second try.
Some standard up-front rugby found Queen City resorting to hands in a ruck
to stop our advance, they were rewarded by 3 points off of Gary Beaudette's
boot. All of City's efforts at stopping the superior Quin back line were
unsuccessful as wing Rich Kindel attacked his hopelessly outnumbered
opposite, handing off to weak side wing Josh Nance to score after a 60meter
run.
The forwards decided to make our mark on the game when we were awarded a 5
meter scrummage. City's pack, while outweighing the Quins, were unable to
hold back the drive, and Rob Kuck, showing his famous footwork, fell on the
ball in-goal. Beaudette split the uprights for the only conversion on the
day.
At the half time whistle, most of the Quins apparently forgot that they
needed to show up for the next 40 minutes. The forwards started off well,
pressuring a scrum inside the City 22. Flanker Joe Biss tackled City's
scrumhalf, the ball was quickly collected by Rob Kuck, who darted the
10meters into the in-goal.
It was a long period while we watched Queen City retreat down the field,
only to have the Quins infringe the new laws. After the 5 or 6th time of
turning the ball over to them, poaching it in the lineout, and then turning
it over again, City finally began to punish us, putting in a few tries.
The highlight of the last 20minutes was some sustained pressure on the City
backline, leading to a poached ruck. As Kuck advanced it and drew two of
the defenders, he was able to pass off to John Kosanovich. JK, with a speed
that belies his size, was able to elude the fullback and dive under the
posts.
Sustained pressure brought another try to City, but the Quins were able to
keep their composure on the last kickoff, taking the ball into touch
for the final whistle.
