Harlequins at Ft Collins

For the first time in 5 years, the Quins visited Fort Collins without a threat of snow to overshadow the match. This wasn't the only change on the day as the Flamingos came out with a new expansive game pattern, and shocked the visitors for the first 15 minutes, running in a try to the corner 10 minutes into the game.

Under the posts, the forwards pulled together, realized that we were meant to be playing the first match rather than spectating, and got into the game. Sustained pressure from the restart saw Fort Collins 10 meters out from their own line at a ruck. Hooker Gilligan [to cries of "he must be offside"] charged down the clearance kick, deflecting it to flyhalf Mike Smith who adroitly fielded the kick. A sidestep from Smith, followed by a burst from Gary Beaudette saw the Quins draw even.

After a bit of uneventful rugby, the Quins chipped ahead to pressure the ingoal. As Ft Collins dotted down and restarted at the 22, Hugh Miller tapped back to Dan Roder, who motored over a couple defenders before setting the ruck. Once again, the five-eighths combined for a try as Smith drew the defense wide and Beaudette switched inside, darting in for the converted try.

The halftime whistle blew, some fresh legs came onto the pitch, and the Quins began to drive down the field again. After multiple phases, marching the ball down the field, the Quins were driving over the 22. Smith drew the defense wide, and David Trexler straightened the angle, switching through the midfield and touching down under the posts.

The next sequence of play looked shockingly familiar as the Quins began marching down the field again. The Flamingos infringed the offside line, and the ball was cleared to touch. Off the lineout, a ruck was set, the pill flew out wide, and Trex took it to the corner to cement the lead.

The final minutes of the match were a flurry of action as the home side took the ball over in injury time to bring the scoreline to 24-10 in favor of the Quins.
