Harlequins vs Ft Collins
Match Report
Tip your hat to the Harlequins with a 21-8 victory over Fort Collins.
Between a hat trick from fullback Rich Kindell and the footwork of hooker
Hattrup, the Quins dominated the match from the first scrummage. At times
it seemed that lock Hugh Miller was the only forward in the loose, but he
managed to poach enough off their rucks to win back the few possessions the
Flamingos had.
The game started off as a slow affair, as both teams seemingly needed to get
their legs under them. Knock ons followed each other and lead to multiple
scrummages. The front row, led by tighthead Rich Matteucci, hit each set
piece hard, leading to lightning strikes and steals from hooker Gilligan.
Our backs managed to move the ball down field, and a scrum at the center of
the 22 had a predetermined outcome. A blindside move saw Kindell insert
wide and dot down in the corner.
Ft Collins struck back, using the wind to their advantage to score a try.
An offside call punished us, as the Flamingos took the lead 8-5.
The wakeup call worked, as a tighthead turned into a quick kick, recovered
by Kindell. He passed to openside Jon Trussler, whom, after ignoring
Gilligan calling for the ball, passed back to Kindell. Rich took off across
the field, ignored Gilligan calling for the ball, and passed to wing Mike
Smith. Smith sucked in the fullback, ignored Gilligan calling for the ball
and (surprise) passed to Kindell, who finally turned the corner and scored
the try in the corner.
Halftime brought no changes to the Quin lineup, but the first scrum saw a
few new faces in the Flamingo front row. Some things never change though --
a kick to touch to start the second half brought a tighthead at the midfield
point. A diving over call against the Flamingos was turned into 3 points by
outside half Dan Hyde.
More pressure into the Flamingo half of the field saw the hosts infringing
again, and Hyde scoring another 3 points. The final try of the match came
off some loose play, the ball was spun wide, and Kindell took it to the
corner to close the match at 21-8.
Tries: Kindell (3)
Penalties: Hyde (2)
