Harlequins at Queen City

As a precursor to a Western championship match, Colorado Springs couldn't
have asked for stiffer competition than what was provided by the Quins.
The Quin's hands and common sense was lost somewhere between C470 and US24,
as the match was marred by lost opportunities and costly penalties.
From the kickoff, the Denver jokers were handing the ball and territory to
the Springs, who quickly capitalized with a try in the corner. The Quins
steeled themselves, taking a few penalties off of the Grizzlies, with Ryan
Hurley lunging into the corner for the equalizer. The conversion was
entertainingly missed, but made up for a few minutes later after another
infringment from the hosts led to 3 points from the boot of Rob Thompson.
After an up and down the field affair, what was a promising attack was
marred by the sinbinning of loosehead Dan Roder. The Springs quickly
struck, by scoring a try 2 minutes into his forced rest. A solid kickoff,
and considerable pressure from the Denver defense led to a breakdown inside
the Springs' 22. Quick footwork from the frontrow led to another try by
Hurley.
The Springs managed to remain in the lead, answering each try from the Quins
with one of theirs. The tide seemed to be turning, as more forward power
pressured a Springs 5m scrum. As the ball squirted out the back, Hurley
dove on it for his 3rd try of the game. John Kosanovich did his best
Eales-impersonation by converting the try.
More midfield mistakes from the Grizzlies led to a 5meter lineout. From the
ensuing ruck, Hurley saw the goal line and dove in for his fourth and final
try.
The final effort of the Quins was not enough, as each attacking venture
either ended in touch or with a dropped ball.
Best of luck to Colorado Springs as they attempt to claim the Western Title
next weekend.
Tries: Hurley (4)
Conv: Kosanovich
Pen: Thompson
Bside:
The only comment I have about the Bside match is that it was a display of
refereeing surpassed only by the hosting referees of the South African tours
of the 1970s.
