Harlequins vs Ft Collins
Interactive Roster Match Report Match Photos
The Quins hosted our northern neighbors on a beautiful day for rugby. The
recently revitalized Ft Collins team opened the scoring with the first touch
of the ball in fullback Mike Schulze's hands, as he hit a drop goal on the
fly from 50meters out. The next few times he touched it, he also tried
bombing the ball back through the uprights.
Quickly adjusting the game plan to "ball in hand", the Quins put a
significant amount of pressure on the visitors' defense. 60 meter drives
would eventually end in unnecessary penalties. Those were rewarded by the
kick being taken to touch, well inside the Quins' half.
One shining moment of the Quin's attack came through multi-phase ball,
ending with a series of penalties against the northerners. After a penalty
was awarded 5 meters out from the line, hooker Gilligan quickly tapped the
ball and dove over the line for the sole try of the game. Rob Thomas
converted for a 4point lead. Schulze answered with penalty kick to bring
the halftime score to 7-6.
The rest of the game was basically the same affair -- ball in hand and
strong running from the Harlequins, only to be penalized, and find
themselves back in their own half. Schulze contributed two more penalties
in the second half to bring the final score to 12-7 for the Flamingos.
