Harlequins vs Vail Interactive Roster Match Report Match Photos
By Dan Hattrup The Quins welcomed Vail rugby club down from the mountains in our first pre-season game. It was an opportunity for some of the new faces around the club to make an impact and for the coaching staff to try out some new combinations. Possibly the best showing of this was the one Quin try, scored by former international Charles Olumo, as he darted down the sideline after receiving a pass from a quick interception. Vail was considerate enough to give our backs some excellent tackling practice by running hard and straight at them. The forwards, not wanting to be left out were accomodated by the Vail packs, who would pick and drive right off the side of the rucks and mauls. The inside center for Vail receives this author's personal thanks, as his switches off the flyhalf pointed out the defensive value of bringing a forward in to cover the cutback. All in, it was a great opportunity to test out any sore shoulders and make sure that we remember that defense is the lynchpin to any game. Our ability to shift the defense from side to side across the field will serve the Quins well throughout the rest of the season. Our scrummaging was solid, our lineouts were effective, and now it's time for the Quins to focus on the loose play. The first match brought back an understanding of the offside line, or at least a constantly whistled reminder that we need to be behind it. Other law highlights were an explanation of offside at a kick by Rob "I kicked the ball, how can I be offside??"
